  • To receive an income in Australia a person requires a tax file number
  • An Australian citizen 16 years or older needs to complete a Tax file number – application or enquiry for individuals (NAT 1432) form. The form must be accompanied by original documents which prove identity. The TFN will not be processed without the necessary documents. A full list of acceptable documents is provided in the instructions to the form.
  • This can be downloaded from http://www.ato.gov.au/individuals/content.aspx?doc=/content/4716.htm&mnu=42525&mfp=001 or by phoning 1300 720 092.
  • For secondary school students, the quickest and easiest way for them to get a TFN is via the secondary schools TFN program. Applying this way is easy because the school verifies the student’s identity. It is not necessary to prove any evidence of identity documents. Some details from the student’s Australian birth certificate, Australian citizenship certificate, or overseas passport are required. Check with the school to see if they are part of the program.
  • A person does not have to have a tax file number but if they don’t – or they don’t disclose it on the form – the payer must withhold tax at the highest rate plus Medicare levy from the person’s pay, unless they qualify for an exemption. When a person starts a new job, they have 28 days to give their tax file number to their employer before the employer must start deducting tax from the person’s pay at the highest rate plus Medicare levy.
