Lovers of books

The National Year of Reading kicks off on Valentine’s Day (14th February, in case you’ve forgotten) with events across the country. If you love reading you might like to celebrate by buying a book for your sweetheart. Or, you might consider helping a charity bring some bookish pleasure to someone in need.

The Pyjama Foundation is just one of the many charities that do an incredible job supporting vulnerable children. The Foundation recruits, screens, trains and supports Pyjama Angels – volunteers who work with children in foster care.

There are around 31,000 children in care in Australia. That figure has doubled in the last decade. Sadly, 92% of children in care are below the average reading level at age seven and 75% of these children do not complete schooling. Research shows that any improvement in literacy will have a positive impact on a person’s life.
